2007
The final major modifications
to Project Golf are now underway. This year the Golf will receive
a Big Turbo Upgrade. In preparations for the build and to ensure
the power can be transmitted to the wheels, a 6-speed transmission
was purchased. The transmission was brought to H2Sport to receive
an LSD upgrade (Pelequin), and a new SPEC Stage 3+ Clutch and SPEC
Steel flywheel were also purchased. In order to transfer the power
to the wheels the stock axles will be swapped with units from Raxles.
These Stage 3 drive shafts have been tested for up 700whp and have
a lifetime warranty. A B&M short shifter will be the final addition
to the transmission swap.
On the turbo front a GT2871R, sourced from ATPTrubo.com will replace
the stock KO3S. The log style stock manifold will be replaced by
a Tubular style top mount manifold which was fabricated at JRP and
ceramic coated at fireball ceramics. A Tial 44mm wastegate and Tial
50mm BOV will keep the boost in check. The stock computer will be
swapped out for a Standalone Management System from 034Motorsports.
This standalone was designed around the BOCH ECU and comes with
a full engine harness for a plug & play installation. 034Motorsports
also provided the 255LPH Walbro fuel pump with a drop-in kit, the
810cc injectors, 2-5bar FPR, underhood fuel gauge, high output coilpacks,
and DBW to DBC conversion kit. To aid in tuning the car an AEM wideband
gauge will be installed along with EGT, and OIL pressure 42nddraftdesign
gauges.
Vibrant Performance provided all fabrication components required
to upgrade the intercooler and exhaust system. The exhaust will
be custom fabricated form 3" Stainless Steel components and
will include a high flow cat, flex pipe, and black stealth muffler.
The down pipe will also incorporate a 1.75" wastegate dump
tube. Vibrant also provided the larger intercooler core and 2.5"
aluminum piping and couplers. The stock turbo inlet pipe will be
changed to 3" Vibrant aluminum piping. The V-band exhaust clamping
systems, T-bolt quick release clamps for the intercooler pipes,
all vacuum lines, vacuum splitter unit, silicon couplers, and numerous
other flanges and fittings also came from Vibrant Performance.
The BT install will begin in the next couple of weeks and will be
performed by Jason at Foreign Automotive.
Total Investment for
2007 was $19,500

2006
Once again the car spent
the winter at BAC Autobody where some of the paint imperfections where
fixed. A set of Hagus M3 Style Power and heated mirrors were added.
Continuing with the exterior modifications, a Eurogear Boser CF Hood
replaced the custom made Boser Metal Hood and a VIS Racing CF Hatch
took the spot of the OEM unit. The rear wiper was replaced with a
Skoda Octavia unit, the rear ember was blackout and the rear hatch
handle was overlayed with CF to match the hatch. The stock headlights
were replaced with Hella MKV look units with custom painted black
housings and covered in yellow Lamin-X. The roof was covered in black
to give the car a two-tone look. To match the new colour combination
the TSW's were switched out for a set of Staggered 18" Axis Hiro
measuring 18 x 8.5 in the front and 18 x 9.5 in the rear. The wheels
were wrapped in Toyo T1R tires 225/40R18 for the front and 255/35R18
for the rear. The final exterior mods were black side repeaters from
Euroline Performance and a new rear door roll call provided once again
by Steve at Xtreme Inc.
With the exterior modifications finally completed, it was time to
upgrade some of the interior bits. With help from Jason from Foreign
Automotive the stock seats, rear bench and center armrest were swapped
out for Recaro Units courtesy of a 2005 Jetta GLI. The Jetta GLI door
panels were converted to fit the Golf as well. A R32 cluster, R32
aluminum center console and Illuminated Jetta vents were added to
the dashboard. The sunroof control panel was replaced with a Passat
W8 unit which has red ambient LED lights. The Gray Momo Jet steering
wheel was replaced with a new Momo Evo black unit to match the new
interior.
Next on the upgrades list was the ICE Category. The car was brought
to Point Zero in Waterloo where the Audio/Video upgrades were completed.
The Blaupunkt unit was swapped out for a Clarion VDX745 7" Indash
Screen. The factory speakers were replaced with Clarion SS601 units.
Two Eclipse 10" Titanium coned subs were added to the trunk.
The front and rear speaker sets are individually powered by APX2180
amplifiers and the subs receive juice from Clarion 's DPX1800 Monoblock
Amp. A 2 Farad Capacitor was also added to prevent the amps from cutting
out. The Subs and Amps are housed in a custom trunk enclosure covered
in black suede and lit by Blue Streetglow neons.
The only performance modifications for 2006 were the additions of
an ESC N75 wastegate controller and a swap from GIAC-X to REVO Software.
Total Investment for
2006 was $16,700

2005
The Golf spent all winter
at BAC Autobody receiving a full exterior makeover. A full Rieger
body kit was imported from Germany by AMIMotorsports in Barrie. This
included the RRS front lip, RRX rear lip, M3 Style sides, 2-bar front
grill, and Boser Metal hood extension. John @ BAC carefully molded
the grill, front and rear lips to the stock bumpers. The hood was
also transformed using the purchased extension. Finally the whole
car was re-sprayed in a silver base with blue pear custom paint. Continuing
the exterior modifications, the original tails were airbrushed in
all red and the 17" wheels were ditched for a set of 18"
TSW Sting, thanks to a good friend. Steve at Xtreme Inc. provided
the rear door roll call graphics.
The interior also received a new Momo Jet Steering wheel and a Momo
Shift Knob, both purchased from Point Zero, in Waterloo. A new 2way
pager Avital alarm was also installed.
In the performance front the stock intercooler was replaced with a
front mount unit from ABD, and all piping was changed as part of the
upgrade. A Eurosport Oil cooler kit was also added along with an OEM
R32 Rally Skid plate, which enhances front chassis stiffness and ensures
the aluminum oil pan survives even in poor road conditions. The stock
brakes were ditched for Cross-Drilled and Cadmium Plated KVR Rotors
and Hawk HPS Black Racing Pads. All mechanical modifications were
once again completed by Jason at Foreign Automotive.
Total Investment for
2005 was $7,700

2004
The long awaited suspension
upgrades came in the summer of 2004. The Golf received The FK Highsport
Plus-X Height and Dampening adjustable coilovers, which have a lifetime
warranty. Neuspeed sway bars were also added (25mm front and 28mm
rear). Suspension upgrade was completed with FK strut bars (front
and rear), Forge dogbone and Polyurethane bushing upgrades. Later
on in 2004 the car received a stainless steel turbo back exhaust system
courtesy of APR. The 2.5" system gave a little more 00mph in
the higher rpm range. All the parts were purchased from Beverly Tire
(formerly known as Sanderson's Tire) in Cambridge ON and installed
by Jason @ Foreign Automotive. The car started the season on the stock
15" wheels, then a set of Borbet Type S were used in the middle
of the summer (Thanks to Joe P from NeonCanada.com ) and finally the
17"s were brought back near the end of the summer. The large
sun strip gave way to the lower windshield banners advertising my
two car clubs.
Total Investment for
2004 was $4,500

2002
Project Golf began in
2002. Although the car was purchased in Spring of 2001, it was not
until early 2002, that the modification started. Being a university
student without a real income made it difficult to purchase many parts.
2002 brought the first functional mods to the car in the form of new
wheels (17" OEM Monte Carlo), and Audi TT Pedals & Dead Pedal.
A mild Stereo System upgrade which included a Blaupunkt San Jose MP3
player, 10" Xplod Subwoofer and Power Akousitk 320W amplifier
was also installed. On the Styling front the stock black valences
were shaved smooth and painted to match the bumpers and the OEM Muffler
tips were installed. Lastly a vinyl sun strip was added to the windshield
and the side markers and portions of the tail lights were also covered
in silver vinyl.
Total Investment for
2002 was $3,000
